Less frequent are the cases in which the sense of smell reigns supreme. It is known that certain body odors cause erotic stimulation and may be conducive to normal intercourse. However, there are ‘odor fiends’ who chase a definite odor, become inebriated, and reach an orgasm from it. I have known men who relished certain perfumes, other who used scented handkerchiefs, men who masturbated while following heavily perfumed women on the street. Others are attracted by the smell of perspiration, or they crave the smell of a definite zone of the body. The smell of linen, underwear, worn apparel, and the like may also become sexual stimulations.
Case No. 35: Mr. T.N., forty-five, a physician, has had since early childhood a craving for the smell of old bedsheets in which elderly women have slept. As a physician, he has had occasionally an opportunity to put his head under a bedspread while ostensibly engaged in examining a patient. At such moments he has had an emission.”
